    The shorebird subgroup of the larger Megafauna Expert Group was tasked with evaluating the adequacy of existing shorebird monitoring activities, and suggesting indices to achieve the objectives and requirements of the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program (RIMReP).     Inversion improves the recognition of facial expression in thatcherized images

    The Thatcher illusion provides a compelling example of the face inversion effect. However, the marked effect of inversion in the Thatcher illusion contrasts to other studies that report only a small effect of inversion on the recognition of facial expressions. To address this discrepancy, we compared the effects of inversion and thatcherization on the recognition of facial expressions. We found that inversion of normal faces caused only a small reduction in the recognition of facial expressions. In contrast, local inversion of facial features in upright thatcherized faces resulted in a much larger reduction in the recognition of facial expressions. Paradoxically, inversion of thatcherized faces caused a relative increase in the recognition of facial expressions. Together, these results suggest that different processes explain the effects of inversion on the recognition of facial expressions and on the perception of the Thatcher illusion. The grotesque perception of thatcherized images is based on a more orientation-sensitive representation of the face. In contrast, the recognition of facial expression is dependent on a more orientation-insensitive representation. A similar pattern of results was evident when only the mouth or eye region was visible. These findings demonstrate that a key component of the Thatcher illusion is to be found in orientation-specific encoding of the features of the face

    Despite tepid economic indicators, the demand for hotel rooms in the United States has surged since the depths of the great recession in 2009. Bucking all apparent economic trends, lodging has been a leading industry during this sluggish economic recovery. This is different from past recovery periods when hotels typically lagged other industries. In this article, the authors identify and explain the economic forces behind the growth in lodging demand during the recovery. Then they examine future changes in lodging demand based on two different economic forecast scenarios

    This research extends previous work on understanding hotel demand by focusing on the demand curve. Specifically, attention is directed toward the slope of the curve indicating the relationship between average daily rate (ADR) and the number of rooms sold - the price elasticity. Also, we investigate shifts in the curve caused by demand determinants such as changes in income, the extent is represented by income elasticity. Our findings are consistent with estimates produced by others for short-run elasticity, but we report sometimes noticeable differences between long-run and short-run elasticity. Price and income elasticity are considerably larger for higher quality hotels as indicated by the chain scale in which they operate. Elasticity tends to increase with data disaggregation.     [Extract] The current seabird monitoring strategy for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is the Coastal Bird Monitoring and Information Strategy - Seabirds 2015-2050 (CBMIS-2015). This strategy is built around monitoring breeding populations of indicator species that represent different feeding guilds at identified essential breeding sites. Patterns of visitation aim to maximise the likelihood of surveys coinciding with the breeding of 20 species while minimising operational effort. Of necessity, the overall strategy is a compromise between the number of sites, visitation rates and logistic constraints. The Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program (RIMReP) review process undertaken here assesses whether the CBMIS-2015 strategy, designed within these constraints, is adequate to meet the needs of the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050 Plan)
